Planet250 is happy to announce a strategic collaboration with the ICRO-accredited carbon standard BioCarbon Standard. The partnership will start with the launch of a digital MRV working group coordinated by Planet2050.
This initiative aims to foster innovation, share expertise, and develop a robust roadmap for BioCarbon's future dMRV implementation.
The BioCarbon dMRV Working Group will bring together 5–10 participants (individuals and organizations) for a series of virtual meetings starting in September 2025.
The goal is to engage with stakeholders, learn, and define specifications, priorities and a roadmap for later implementation by BioCarbon. The main deliverable of the Working Group would be a set of recommendations for action and implementation.
Call for applications is open until July 31st, participants to be announced in August, and WG will start in late September.

Digital MRV (dMRV) refers to the use of digital technologies to automate, streamline, and enhance the Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification of environmental data, particularly for carbon, water and biodiversity projects.
It integrates a range of tools, including digital forms and platforms, mobile applications, remote sensing (e.g., satellite imagery, drones), IoT sensors, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) for data analysis, or blockchain or Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) for data integrity and transparency.
The primary goal of dMRV is to increase the accuracy, efficiency, transparency, and credibility of climate and nature impact claims, reducing costs and accelerating the issuance of high-integrity environmental credits.
BioCarbon Standard is an ICROA-Accredited international standard from the Global South with a mission to contribute to climate change mitigation & adaptation, biodiversity conservation and sustainable development, with three certification programs: carbon, biodiversity and water.

release at the Nairobi's event together with Planet2050 "Scaling Carbon Markets in Eastern Africa"
At Planet2050, we are pioneering digital innovation for a more trusted and connected carbon market. Our co-founding team brings deep expertise, having previously built cutting-edge carbon accounting and traceability systems for sustainable fuel and chemical value chains.
Further strengthening our expertise, Planet2050 CEO Lucas Zaehringer advised BioCarbon, guiding their integration into web3-based marketplaces (built on blockchain) and co-authoring BioCarbon's Tokenization Guidelines.
To support Planet2050's diverse project portfolio, we are building a state-of-the-art digital MRV Connector. This connector will be the backbone of our innovative Planet2050 dMRV Passport, designed to effortlessly integrate data from all our service providers, third-party tools, platforms, and specialized Life Cycle Assessment software used by projects working across multiple verticals (Permanent CDR, Nature-based Solutions, Super Pollutants..).
The dMRV Passport will revolutionize how stakeholders, particularly carbon credit buyers, access critical information. Instead of digging through fragmented documentation on registries or other repositories, they can benefit from an easy-to-navigate, interoperable data sharing system, aligned with data standards being established in the market. Even at a project portfolio level.
Assess Current State: analyze existing MRV processes within BioCarbon's standard and identify critical opportunities and challenges for digital integration. A stakeholder consultation is being launched in parallel to collect more inputs.
Explore Technological Frontiers: investigate the practical application and suitability of various dMRV technologies (e.g., remote sensing, IoT, AI/ML, blockchain/DLT) for carbon and biodiversity monitoring, reporting, and verification, relevant in nature-based projects (AFOLU), but also in biodiversity monitoring, energy and industrial sectors
Define Integration Pathways: propose concrete and actionable approaches for embedding dMRV solutions into BioCarbon's methodologies, project development lifecycle, data hosting, and external verification processes.
Identify Risks & Solutions: identify potential risks, barriers, and unintended consequences associated with dMRV adoption, and propose robust mitigation strategies.
Expected Outcomes
A practical recommendation report outlining integration opportunities, priorities, and risks.
A strategic roadmap for phased dMRV implementation by 2026.
Identification of pilot project opportunities and required capacity-building.
An informed foundation for future governance, policies, and infrastructure upgrades
More details can be found on BioCarbon’s page. Market stakeholders are also invited to fill out the consultation form on BioCarbon’s website to express their view on dMRV opportunities and challenges.
